Too Cute

A quarter of a century spent sitting at a low, kidney-shaped table surrounded by 5 - 12 year-old children has left me with more than a few good stories: some sad, some funny, but all touching. Today's story was just too cute. It came at the end of an hour-long therapy session as I hurried four giggling hard-of-hearing fourth-graders to gather their book bags for the bus trip home. The smallest of the group lopped his mesh bag onto our work table. I watched bemusedly as a thick, creamy goo oozed a two-foot wide puddle across the table, some stray splotches plopping onto the carpet. It looked like sunscreen to me. As I stood there trying to figure out why this child was carrying sunscreen in his book bag and also why it had exploded, his mother-hen classmate solved the mystery. "I told you to eat your ice cream, not put it in your book bag!"

He calmly plucked the crushed Styrofoam cup out of the bag and threw it away. There went the anticipated snack for the ride home! If he was ruffled by his mistake, his dignified walk down the hall did not betray him.

  3. Thanks for the comment and congratulations on your selection of speech/language pathology as a career. In 24 years as an SLP I have experienced a fair amount of frustration, challenge, and aggravation, but most days are fun, rewarding, and entertaining. I think that you will enjoy both your studies and a career in the field.

Yes, the Arabic and US cultures differ! I would be interested to hear what about your experiences both as a student and as a practitioner in Kuwait.

  4. its a geat chance to exchange experiance's and cultures.

I'm having fun know because there i have intersted in communication disorders because since childhood in my school they teach us a scaince in the Arabic/Islamic Culture called 'TAJWEED' which i was interested in since chilhood.

basiclly its about a therapy sesstion during recitation the Qura'an. interstengly its a sciance that basicly works on controling the the articulation system and breathing to produce the syllabes in the proper way.

about the arabic socaity, the problem as a talketive culture, they prefer to neglegt the disorder untile the pationts overcome the disorder with time.

therefor i have made a awarness group to schools and housholds and we will start next year. Mainwhile we'our gruop' will take courses in translation-which is important skill to our next lectures and programs' and other stuff.

the good news for u, we will try to make a study during our voluntery awarness group which could help u in ur studies in the US.

    for a better communication
