As mentioned in an earlier blog posting, I am always on the hunt for vocabulary resources for my work as a Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP). SLPs in public schools are tasked not only with remediation of speech/language disorders, but also with supporting the core mission of the school: instruction. I needed a good list of essential academic vocabulary for my students. Robert Marzano is a good source, but the idea of teaching almost 8000 words is a bit overwhelming - even over a student's entire school career. A friend and teacher of deaf/hard of hearing students gave me a treasure trove: DataWORKS Educational Research's list of words that all students should know. The list, sorted by grade, includes Marzano, Fry, Dolch, and high frequency text book and testing words. Also, the Tennessee Academic Vocabulary project assembled good word lists by grade level and subject matter, as well as strategies for teaching them.
